Bespoke

Bespoke is a term that is very loosely used at the moment, however in it’s true sense, refers to a very specific method of producing something, especially in the world of tailoring.

The principle of bespoke tailoring, is to produce garments with the finest hand made quality, according to the specific requirements of the individual, that fit their unique body shape with distinction. To achieve this successfully, all garments are made entirely from scratch and follow a very specific process, making it the ultimate sartorial experience.

The process begins with an astute analysis of the individual’s measurements, posture, shape, unique characteristics and preferences. This information is used to draft the individuals exclusive pattern and identify the specific techniques required for the garment to fit the unique body shape as it should. The garment goes through a series of “basted” fittings that allow the bespoke tailor to fine tune the fit at different stages as it advances toward completion. Inside and out, only the finest materials and trimmings are used, and said materials are stitched and moulded together by hand with extreme attention to detail.

This is the process that is used by J.H. Cutler bespoke tailor & CANVAS by J.H. Cutler bespoke tailor, which has been unchanged in our business since 1884.

  • Our opening hours for appointments are between 8:30am – 6:00pm Monday to Friday
  • After hour and Saturday appointments can be made available upon request. Enquire here
  • Bespoke is different from made to measure, in that the pattern of the garment is made completely from scratch according the measurements, shape, posture and unique characteristics of the individual. It is also made with a very specific and traditional process that is entirely by hand, inside and out and includes a series of basted fittings. Our bespoke tailoring is cut and made on premises by our team of artisan tailors.

  • Made to measure is when an existing pattern (fit) exists in a full size range, and a customer’s size is determined and adjusted where necessary in order to achieve a great result. The initial consultation includes a fitting with a try on garment, which is used to determine your fit. Your unique pattern is made by applying the required alterations to the pre-existing pattern that corresponds to the try on garment used. Your garment is then made and we have a final fitting with the completed garment, which may require minor alterations. Made to measure garments are mostly made by machine, however all the finishing’s, including top stitching, buttonholes and bar tacks are made by hand. Our made to measure tailoring has been exclusively developed and is entirely made with a specialised tailoring workshop in Tuscany, Italy.
